Post 1

IMPORTANT DATES:

October 17th: ASCA begins
Please notify me in writing if you decide to enroll your child in the PTO's After School Creative Arts Program (ASCA) as this will affect dismissal plans. Please visit the ASCA site if you are interested in learning more or registering for classes.

October 19th: Picture Day
More information to follow.

NOTICES:

For dismissal, please stand on the right side of door 19 so that your child will be able to see you through the front windows nearest the corner of the school. As there are 2 classrooms dismissing from the same door at the same time, we have decided that our class will exit through the right door and Ms. Patteson's class will dismiss from the left door. I will have children who see their pick-up person line up, say goodbye to me and then they will be dismissed. If they do not see you, they will stay in the art room until they see you through the window. This will help to ensure everyone's safety. Thanks!

CURRICULUM UPDATE:

Reading: We started Readerís Workshop this week. We worked on increasing our reading stamina for independent reading, talked about real vs. fake reading, learned how to access our classroom library and how to pick a good reading spot.

We read One by Kathryn Otoshi (a goosebump-inducing picture book that I highly recommend!), Lillyís Purple Plastic Purse by Kevin Henkes (to help frame a discussion about successful school behaviors), and Dex, the Heart of a Hero (to help introduce the concept of stamina).

Writing:  We began working on our hopes and dreams for second grade. Some ideas that your children want to work on are:

  • Learn more about math, science, and reading.
  • Make amazing choices.
  • Make new friends.
  • Learn that mistakes are great!!!!!
  • Learn how to control my actions.
  • Be a great reader and always be engaged
  • Get more stamina in reading
  • And of course… learn about some of the deadliest animals.
Math: In math, we worked on number sequences and coins this week. We also explored our math journals.

Community Building: We have played many games together this week, such as tag on the playground and Doggie, Doggie, Where's Your Bone. We have also worked in morning meeting to share and listen to each other's news.

Classroom and School Expectations:

This week, we practiced and practiced and practiced some more how to engage in classroom routines, use classroom materials and work in specific areas of our room. Some things we practiced were:
  • How to use our book bins, cubbies, and classroom library
  • How to choose good learning spots
  • How to use the field and structure at recess
  • Showing what it looks like and sounds like to take care of ourselves, each other and materials
