CURRICULUM UPDATE:

In reading
  • We read pourquoi tales and over the course of the week, we determined what elements are similar in all pourquoi tales. We mapped the pourquoi tales we read using the maps that we created.
At home, search the internet for pourquoi tales that you can read together.

Next week, we will begin learning about a new type of folktale - trickster tales.

In fundations (word study):
  • Continued our work in unit 11, which covers the long e sound.
  • We used the spelling options procedure to practice writing words with long e using the vowel teams ee, ea, ey and e-e, e and y.
  • Trick words ready, breakfast, head
At home, please refer to the Units 1-11 family letter to learn how you can support our word study work at home. Also, look though the fundations/word study section on my website. There, you will find all of the first and second grade trick words. If your child needs practice with these words, please practice through activities such as playing bingo, memory or through reviewing them on flashcards. Here is a link to a great website with different sight word games that you might like to try

Next week, we will finish our work in unit 11.

    In social studies:
    • We read a story and watched a video to learn about Chinese New Year.
    • We watched a video about ancient China.
At home, finish work on the China project. These are due next week. You may bring them in on Monday-Thursday and students will present at some point after they have been turned in.

Next week, we will learn from each other's presentations.

    In science we:
    • We learned about the parts of a caterpillar.
    • We learned a song about the parts of a caterpillar. It is sung to the tune of Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes.

    Head, thorax, abdomen
    And 6 true legs
    Head, thorax, abdomen
    And pro-legs, too!
And antennae and mandible and spiracles, too.
    Head, thorax, abdomen

At home, ask your child about the parts of a caterpillar.

Next week, we will continue learning more about caterpillars.

    In writing:
    • We wrote opinion pieces about our favorite special, starting with a topic sentence that states our opinion, providing a most important reason to support our opinion, stating multiple examples and writing a conclusion.
Next week, we will continue working in our opinion writing unit by writing book awards.

    In math:
    • We worked on a math problem about a new Color Day activity involving time and distance.
    • We measured objects in inches and centimeters.
At home, challenge your child to estimate distances or lengths in your home and then measure them accurately.

Next week, we will work with place value.

      In CAP:

      • We discussed being safe, strong and free.
      • We discussed safe places and people in our lives.
      • We talked about having your children talk with you about what you would like them to do if you are ever separated in a public place, such as a store or museum. The suggestions were to either find someone who works at that location or a mom, however talk with your child about what you would like them to do.
      • We discussed stranger safety.
We also had a presentation about sustainable fishing practices today by a group of students in Luke's mom's class at Newton South. They wrote an engaging children's book about the topic that they shared with us. Ask your child about it!!

Have a great weekend! Happy Mother's Day!!
